Adoption of container-based application deployment models like Docker is expected to grow. It stands to reason then, that interest in ways to combine compute and storage will grow as well. To that end, Red Hat is demonstrating this week at Mobile World Congress 2016 the combination of Quanta Cloud Technology (QCT) servers and Red Hat Ceph Storage containerization technology.

Enterprise mobility has taken off, and as a result many financial service providers are struggling to keep pace with the demand for mobile solutions as well as the necessary supporting technologies and the developer skills to deliver it. Gartner predicts that by 2017, demand for mobile app services will grow at least five times faster than internal IT organizations’ capacity to deliver them. To meet growing demand, developer tools, mobile app development platforms, microservice architectures, agile methods, open source software, cloud models and solution ecosystems are quickly evolving.

According to the overview of Mobile World Congress 2016, the event in Barcelona will provide “in-depth coverage of the current and future mobile industry, highlighting specific areas of growth as well as the latest technological developments, next generation services and growth strategies.” Sure enough, there are several thought-provoking sessions that make one take pause and consider the impact that technology has on next-generation services—especially when it comes to service provider networks. And in that vein, the televised debate on the merits and challenges of deploying open source across telco service provider (SP) networks held at Ocana, Placa Reial in Barcelona is particularly interesting. This debate has a panel of three distinguished experts from three different enterprises: AT&T, Telefonica and Red Hat. Since I am not at the conference, I’ve reached out to one of my colleagues, Ian Hood, Global Chief Architect for our service provider partners at Red Hat. Ian was all geared up to attend the conference but he did take some time to engage in a close-to-happy hour conversation across the pond before departure. So I’ve asked: “OK, bud! Mobile-edge computing (MEC) is a highly distributed computing architecture based on the deployment of small computing units in both outdoor and indoor radio access network (RAN) facilities at the edge of their mobile networks. Red Hat has joined a recently created European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) working group to help define MEC use-cases and architecture details as a complementary effort to the existing NFV and 5G initiatives.

Suppose you could watch a cable TV channel from any provider of your choice and not be locked-in to only the channel selection from your provider’s set-top box. For example, imagine you can watch cable channels using your Apple TV.
