TelecomTV’s Tony Poulos caught up with Tim Yeaton, senior vice president & group executive of Red Hat’s infrastructure business group, at Mobile World Congress to delve into the hot topic of network functions virtualization (NFV). You can watch the full interview to learn why NFV has become such an important technology consideration for today’s communications service providers (CSPs).
In the interview, Tim discusses today’s challenges with the technology that’s been available in the past and what NFV brings to the table to fill current market needs for fast service delivery, scalability, security and performance. He also talks implementation, sharing adjustments he sees for telcos, key areas to examine, and how Red Hat fits in.
Tim says “the biggest adjustment we see CSPs needing to do is to think about an architecture.” He goes on to explain that NFV is about building a software platform that enables scale-out of network functions, which is a different concept than the hardware appliances that comprised network infrastructure in the past. The key areas CSPs should examine when exploring an NFV solution are the lifecycle and the quality of the technology, according to Tim.
